Gold For Cyprus' Men's Basketball
NICOSIA, 6 June
2009 - After the 1985, 1995, 1997, 2001, 2003 and 2005
gold medals, the Cyprus men’s basketball national team
did it again. On Saturday (06/06) the hosts beat Andorra
91-70 and took first place in the basketball tournament
of the XIII Games of the Small States of Europe.
In the
game against Andorra, the hosts were continuously in
charge, besides a moment in the beginning of the second
period, when Andorra tied the score at 19. But with a
careful play in defense and offence, Cyprus reached to
the important win.

* The president of the Cyprus Olympic
Committee, Ouranios Ioannidis, presented the medals to
the top three nations. Gold to Cyprus, silver to
Luxemburg and bronze to Andorra.
* Josh Casar (secretary general of the
Maltese OC) presented the medals to the winning nations
of the women’s tournament. Malta won the gold, Iceland
took silver and Cyprus settled with bronze.
Luxemburg beat Iceland 74-66 on
Saturday’s first game and claimed second place and the
silver medal. Iceland missed out of the medal chase.
