Take Gold In Table Tennis
NICOSIA,
6 June 2009 -
Gudmundur Eggert Stephensen from Iceland
and Xia Lian Ni from Luxemburg confirmed the pre-game
predictions and won the gold medals in Men’s and Women’s
singles tournaments respectively in the XIII Games of
the Small States of Europe.
The 27year old Icelander and the 46year
Luxembourgian, lust like in Monaco two years ago, won
gold medal. In the men’s final Stephensen, who beat
Marios Giagkou of Cyprus in the semifinal, beat Dagi
Wang of San Marino 3-1. Wang earlier on Saturday beat
Gerada from Malta 3-1 to reach the final.
The women’s final turned out to be an
internal affair of Luxemburg. Xia Lian Ni won gold after
beating Simone Haan with 3-1. Ni only lost one set in
the entire tournament (the one against Haan in the
final) on her road to gold. In the semis, Ni beat Yan
Chimei of San Marino while Haan overcame Louiza Kourea
of Cyprus. The two losers of the semifinal shared the
bronze medal.
