Shialou,
Stacchiotti and Iceland Receive Awards
NICOSIA,
6 June 2009 - The Fair Play awards of the XIII Games of
the Small States of Europe were presented on Saturday,
in the presence of World and European Fair Play
Movements representatives.
The European Fair Play
Individual Award was presented by the General Secretary
Yiannis Psilopoulos to Cyprus' Athletics champion Andri
Shialou. At 36 years of age, Shialou won two gold medals
(women's 400m and 400m hurdles) in the XIII GSSE, ending
her great career in such a superb way.
The European Fair Play
Team Award was presented to the Women's Volleyball team
of Iceland, for its behaviour and competitiveness
throughout the whole tournament.
Finally, the World
Fair Play Movement award was presented by the President,
Jeno Kamuti, to the small nations' 'Michael Phelps',
17-year-old Rafael Stacchiotti from Luxemburg.
Stacchiotti won seven gold medals in Men's Swimming,
setting high standards for years to come with his
extraordinary achievements in the pool.
The President of the
XIII GSSE Organising Committee, Ouranios Ioannides,
welcomed Mr Psilopoulos and Mr Kamuti in Cyprus and
congratulated those who were awarded, as well as all the
athletes who "played fair" throughout the Games.
