Judo Joy
For Monaco And Luxembourg
NICOSIA, 5 June
2009 - The Judo event
at the XIII Games of the Small States of Europe came to
a close on Friday, with Monaco and Luxembourg emerging
as the victors in the Men's and Women's events.
The final medals standings saw Monaco, Luxembourg and
Iceland take the top medals with Monaco, who took a
total of ten medals, streaming to gold success in the
men’s event and Luxembourg prevailing in the women’s
event.
Despite going one better in gold medals compared to
Monaco 2007, officials of the Cyprus Amateur
Judo/Taekwondo Federation were far from impressed from
the Cypriot athletes came fourth overall in the medals
standings. Both gold medals were taken in the men’s
event with the women’s event showing an even bigger
shortfall of just two silver medals.
In the third and final day of the judo games, Monaco
missed the chance to celebrate winning the most gold
medals after suffering two defeats in the team finals.
They lost to Cyprus 3-0 whilst the women’s team were
defeated 2-1 by Luxembourg who topped the standings in
their own group.
