Takes Track & Field By Storm
NICOSIA, 4 June 2009
- The Cypriot athletes stormed in the second day of the
Track and Field events of the XIII Games of the Small
States of Europe. Antroulla Shialou took an easy win
(she practically walked the last few meters) in the
women’s 400m. hurdles with a time of 59.99. The one
thousand fans that gave there presence at the GSP
cheered on the 36 year old athlete. Shialou, who lit the
flame in the opening ceremony as an honor for competing
at the 1989 GSSE, returned to the tracks two years after
retiring.
Minas
Alozidis easily won the same event for men, in his first
appearance with the Cyprus team.
At the
long jump, Icelander Kristinn Torfasson won gold medal,
after jumping 7.60m. Torfasson beat Cypriot Mathaios
Volou who improved his personal best by 2 cm, jumping
7.51m., to claim silver. The Icelander jumped in first
place at his fifth try, with Volou answering with two
big, but false, efforts.
Another
gold medal for Cyprus by Apostolos Parellis, who
disappeared the discus at 60.50m. Parellis scored a
Games record and Pancyprian record. Savvas Aresti took
second place with 55.34m. (PB) while Icelander Bergur
Ingi Petursson (who took gold at the Hammer throw event)
finished fourth.
Finally, 17year old Stella Christoforou won her second
gold in the games, after her win in 800m. The young
Cypriot easily won the 1500m. event to give her nation
the ninth gold in Track and Field.
