XIII GSSE:
The Numbers Speak For Themselves
NICOSIA, 4 June
2009 - A record total
of 3,291 accreditations have so far been given out at
the XIII Games of the Small States of Europe, a figure
that is predicted to slowly climb as late accreditation
requests are still on demand.
The
most striking statistic was the number of athletes
taking part at the Games which is a new record for the
event. At this year’s XIII GSSE, a total of 843 athletes
took part - a bigger figure when compared to the Monaco
Games of 1997 when 799 athletes took part. In the first
GSSE event, 24 years ago, 222 athletes took part.
The
number of coaching staff reached 210 this year whilst
the number of judges was 355.
With
regards to figures concerned with VIPs, Heads of States,
Ministers and other high ranking sports officials,
accreditations reached 286 with the Heads of the Team
Delegations and other team officials rising to 90.
There
was also a significant increase in the number of media
personnel attending the Games. A total of 334 media
representatives and correspondents, 103 from abroad,
arrived to cover the event.
The
total amount of medical staff and physiotherapists
reached 247 people (43 doctors, 145 nurses and 59
physiotherapists).
The
entire event is aided by the help of 739 volunteer
workers who are considered “the heart and soul” of the
event and who never failed in lending their immense
assistance to make sure this year’s XIII GSSE will be a
memorable occasion. The Organising Committee of the
Games would like to offer its warmest thanks to the
volunteer workers for their valuable assistance.
