First
Victory For Cyprus In Women's Volleyball
NICOSIA,
3 June 2009
- The Cyprus Women’s Volleyball Team have got off to a
winning start in the XIII Games of the Small States of
Europe.
Nicos
Ioannou’s side beat Luxembourg 3-1 as they successfully
launched their bid to defend the first place finish they
had previously secured at the Monaco Games back in 2007.
It
wasn’t all plain-sailing however as the hosts got off to
an edgy start with lack of concentration costing them
the first set. But they got back into the swing of
things in the second set and, with Nina Chuda, Ivana
Milanovic and Tetyana Timokhova in impressive form,
managed to peg back their opponents and claim the next
three sets.
Sets: 20-25, 25-14, 25-10, 25-12
CYPRUS: Charalambous
(13p), Timokhova, Elizabeth Craney-Riala, Faouta (10),
Chuda (16) Michael (13), Aristeidou (libero), Milanovic
11, Pavlou.
LUXEMBOURG: Noesen (11), Lebon (7), Frisch (7), Weber
(6), Emeringer (1), Bichel (7), Zorn (libero), Watry
(1), Kieffer, Steffen, Gengler (1).
In the men’s event,
Iceland secured their second consecutive victory and are
now in the driving seat for a medal. Just like in their
first game against San Marino, the Icelanders fell
behind in the first set and were forced to rally back to
seal a 3-1 victory.
Sets: 21-25. 25-18,
25-15, 27-25
On Thursday, Iceland take on Andorra at
17:30 whilst Cyprus host Luxembourg in the late game at
