Double Gold
Delight For Luxembourg In Table Tennis
NICOSIA, 3 June 2009 -
Luxembourg once again showed their class in table tennis
by securing a double scoop of gold medals in the men and
women’s team events.
In the second day of
the table tennis event of the XIII Games of the Small
States of Europe, which took place at the "Evangelos
Florakis" Multipurpose Hall, the Luxembourg men’s team
took the gold after defeating Cyprus 3-1.
They had previously
beaten Iceland with the same score in the other game
earlier in the day.
In the women’s event,
Luxembourg was again the team on top as they also
defeated hosts Cyprus 3-0 to complete a resounding
fourth victory in as many games in the competition. Just
like two years earlier in Monaco, San Marino again
finished in second place to win the silver with their
3-1 win over Cyprus who themselves ended the competition
with the bronze medal and third place. Fourth place went
to Monaco after they beat bottom side Iceland 3-0.
The table tennis
competition continues on Thursday with the men and
women’s doubles event. The men’s category sees
Liechtenstein, Cyprus and Iceland in Group 1 whilst
Group 2 comprises of four teams - San Marino,
Luxembourg, Malta and Monaco. The games are set to start
at 09:30, 10:10 and 10:50.
The two first teams
from each group will face each other in the semifinals
(14:30) with each group winner taking on the runner-up
of the other group. The semifinals winners will meet in
the final at 16:00.
The women’s games, however, in the
doubles event will see Luxembourg, Cyprus, Iceland, San
Marino and Monaco all play each other in a mini-league
format. The game times have been set at 09:30, 10:10,
10:50, 15:20 and 16:40. The first three nations in the
standings will claim the gold, silver and bronze medal
depending on their final finish.
