In On Women's Basketball Gold
NICOSIA, 3 June 2009 - The Malta Women’s
Basketball Team has moved even closer towards the gold
medal after defeating hosts Cyprus 53-48 on Wednesday to
move top of the standings.
Santino Coppa’s side secured their second
consecutive win on Wednesday and now need just one more
win against Luxembourg on Friday to take the gold medal.
Cyprus will have it all to do in their
next game to have any chance of toppling the Maltese
whilst at the same time hoping that Luxembourg will do
them a big favour in the other game.
During today’s game, the Maltese side
once again showed what a tidy outfit they are as Cyprus
battled in vain throughout the four quarters of the
game.
In the third quarter, Cyprus tried to
stifle the visitors with more pressure in defence but
the Maltese refused to buckle despite the hosts managing
to reduce the score to just three points (46-49) 2.12
minutes before the end of the game.
The end of the game was met with cheers
from the Maltese players and bench.
