Cyprus Closes In On Target
LIMASSOL, 3 June 2009
-
Cyprus became the first team to qualify to the Women's
Beach Volleyball semifinals at the XIII Games of the
Small States of Europe. Manolina Constantinou and
Mariota Aggelopoulou defeated Luxemburg's Schneider and
Zambon 2-0 (21-14, 21-10) in 40 minutes, in what was
their third win in three games.
The last win was the most important of
all, as Luxemburg was considered one of the favorites,
having won its two previous games. Now, with only two
games left (one against Liechtenstein on Wednesday
afternoon), the girls from Cyprus need just one more
victory to ensure first place in their group, which will
allow them to be in strong position for a medal, facing
the team that will end up fourth.
Day 2 of the Games was also important for
the girls from Liechtenstein, as they celebrated their
first win, against Andorra by 2-0 in 36 minutes.
The other three competitors of the
semifinals are yet to be decided. Even Iceland and
Andorra, who both have lost their first two games, can
still hope, as they each have three more games to play.
