PUNE, India, 17 October 2008 -
Giorgos Kazakos won the silver medal in the Men's
Skeet of the III Commonwealth Youth Games here Friday,
finishing second amongst eight finalists.
Kazakos had
led the standings following the opening day of
competition, with a score of 71/75 targets and retained
his lead coming into the second to last round. But the
15-year-old had a poor performance in the 5th round,
dropping to 5th place and allowing England's 18-year-old Rory Warlow to come from
behind for the pole position. Kazakos staged a comeback
in the final round for a performance of 23/25, which
brought him on the podium, just one target shy of the
gold.
Kazakos finished with a
total performance of 134/150, trailing Warlow by one target.
Scotland's Ben Wilson won the bronze with 133/150.
This was the first ever
medal for Cyprus in the Commonwealth Youth Games. Cyprus
did not compete in the inaugural Games of 2000, nor in
the second edition in 2004.
Previously, Cyprus had
another close encounter with a medal, when Michael
Kolokotronis finished fourth in the men's Hammer Throw.
The 18-year-old was steadily second with 64.53m after
five attempts, but was overtaken on the last try by
England's Peter Smith and India's Ejaj Ahmed.
Cyprus also claimed two
fifth places at the Pune Commonwealth Games, with
18-year-old Anastasia Christoforou in the 50m
Breaststroke and 18-year-old Constantina Pratsi in the
women's 10m Air Pistol.
The III Commonwealth
Youth Games conclude Staurday with the Closing Ceremony.
India topped the medals standings, followed by Australia
and England.
Cyprus took part in
the Pune competition with a delegation of 14 athletes.
The only other Small
