PUNE, India, 12 October 2008 -
Cyprus embarked on its III Commonwealth Youth
Games 2008 quest here, with swimmer Anastasia
Christoforou leading the delegation of 14 athletes as
flag-bearer at the Opening Ceremony. The Ceremony, rich
on the cultural heritage of India, also included an arch
of water from the 71 participating countries. The water
from Cyprus was carried by middle distance runner
Stella Christoforou.
The week-long
competition includes nine sports, with Cyprus
represented in six (Athletics, Swimming, Tennis, Table
Tennis, Boxing and Shooting). Cyprus will not be
competing in Badminton, Weightlifting and Wrestling.
The only other Small
State of Europe to take part in the Commonwealth Games
is Malta, which is fielding a total of twelve athletes,
in Athletics and Shooting.
Neither Cyprus nor Malta
have ever won medals in the previous two editions of the
Commonwealth Youth Games, in Edinburgh 2000 and Bendigo,
Australia 2004.
