NICOSIA, 5 October 2008 -
Former Minister of Education Ouranios Ioannides was
elected president of the Cyprus Olympic Committee
at the 28th General Assembly and will now head the preparations for the XIII
Games of the Small States of Europe CYPRUS 2009. In
a very close vote, Mr Ioannides edged outgoing
president Kikis N. Lazarides 21-20. Mr Lazarides
leaves the presidency of the Cyprus Olympic Committee
after 24 years in office.
Dimitris Lordos was
re-elected vice president, Charalambos Lottas will
replace Andreas Stavrou as General Secreteray and
Damianos Hadjidamianou was re-elected Treasurer.
Elections were also held
for the remaining seven positions of the Executive
Committee of the COC. The new executive members: Pavlos
Photiades, Andreas Vasiliou, George Chrysostomou,
Panikos Prokopiou, Costas Matsoukaris, Nakis Michaelides
and Sotos Trikomitis.
"I am fully aware of the
burden placed upon my shoulder with my election to the
presidency of the Cyprus Olympic Committee," said
Ouranios Ioannides at the conclusion of the Assembly. "I
would like to thank all those who honoured me with their
vote, but also those who made a different choice. I also
wish to express my respect to the outgoing president,
Kikis Lazarides. With our motto, 'Moving Forward', we
embark on a new effort, with the athlete at the
forefront. Ample light will be shed on all our decisions
and actions in our aim to further promote Sport and
Olympism."
