BEIJING, 14
August 2008 - Twenty-four-year-old Andri Eleftheriou
finished 7th in the Skeet competition of the Beijing
2008 Olympic Games, for the best ever Olympic
performance by a Cypriot athlete since 1980 when Cyprus
entered the Games as an independent nation. Eleftheriou
ranked 7th amongst 19 shooters, hitting 67 out of 75
targets.
Eleftheriou, competing
under torrential rain, Thursday morning, hit 22, 23 and
22 targets in each of the three rounds, narrowly missing
a berth in the medals round.
Eleftheriou's success
has spread joy amongst the delegation of Cyprus at the
Beijing Olympics, where her performance is now
considered a good omen for the remainder of the Cypriot
shooters, who have yet to enter competition at these
Olympic Games.
Italy's Chiara Cainero
won the gold after a shoot-out amongst the top three
finishers, with the Kimberly Rhodes of the USA snatching
the silver and Christine Brinker of Germany earning the
bronze.
