BEIJING,
8 August 2008 -
Cyprus is ready to embark on the Olympic quest, as the
Games of XXIX Olympiad get underway here, Saturday. The
delegation of Cyprus, comprising of a total of 17
athletes in six sports paraded before 100,000 spectators
and billions of TV viewers worldwide, Friday evening, at
the spectacular Opening Ceremony of the Games.
Twenty-eight-year-old
shooter Giorgos Achilleos led the delegation as
flag-bearer of Cyprus at the parade of the athletes.
Cyprus is fielding its
strongest team ever at these Games, seeking its first
Olympic medal since joining the Olympic Movement as an
independent nation with the 1980 edition in Moscow.
Cyprus will be represented in Athletics, Sailing,
Shooting, Swimming, Archery and Weightlifting.
The first Cypriots to
enter competition in Beijing are 25-year-old sailor
Haris Papadopoulos in the Finn class and 20-year-old
archer Elena Mousikou, who compete Saturday here.
