NICOSIA, 26
July 2008 -
The first group of the Cyprus delegation to the Beijing
Olympic Games, including Sailors, Swimmers and
Weightlifters departs Sunday evening to the Chinese
capital via Dubai. Heading the Cyprus delegation is
Alecos Spanos, Technical Director of the Cyprus Olympic
Committee.
"An Olympic medal is not
an easy achievement," said Spanos on the eve of the
departure of the delegation. "It would be most unfair to
burden our athletes with the pressure of such a
responsibility. What we request of them is to give it
their best shot and, if possible, to surpass themselves.
Competing against the top stars of world sports, all we
require of our athletes is to feel the gratification and
joy of participating in the Olympic Games."
Cyprus will be competing in Beijing with a total of 18
athletes in seven sports: Athletics, Swimming, Sailing,
Shooting, Archery, Tennis and Weightlifting.
The next group is
scheduled to depart Cyprus on Monday 4 August.
