NICOSIA,
13
June 2008 -
A total of 1,136 athletes are expected to participate in
the XIII Games of the Small States of Europe CYPRUS
2009, to be held 1-6 June next year. The eight
participating countries submitted their tentative entry
lists during the first day of meetings of the Executive
and Technical Committees of the GSSE, hosted in Nicosia
on 13 and 14 June. This breaks the previous record of
793 athletes that competed in the 2005 Games in Andorra.
"Taking
into account the team officials, coaches, trainers,
referees and judges, journalists, members of the Olympic
Family, participants in the Youth Camp and visiting
spectators and fans, we expect that from the 1st until
the 6th of June 2009 we will host about 2,000 guests in
Cyprus," said the President of the Organising Committee,
Kikis N. Lazarides, speaking at a Press Conference here
today.
Following Cyprus, Luxembourg will have the most
participants, with 173 athletes. Athletics will be the
sport with the most participants, with 213 athletes,
followed by volleyball (154), swimming (147) and
basketball (132).
The OC
President also gave information on the television
coverage of the Games, announcing that Lumiere TV has
been appointed the Host TV Broadcaster and will provide
coverage of 21 events, including the Opening and Closing
Ceremonies.
"There will be four live feeds of seven to eight hours
each every day, covering the whole of Cyprus, as well as
countries overseas," said Lazarides. "The live feed will
reach every single interested party across Europe and to
our expats around the globe, through the Hellas Sat
satellite. We will have at our disposal 4 large O.B.
Vans and 50 high-tech cameras. Two television “packets”
of 20 and 40 minutes each will be produced daily and
distributed via satellite."
