2009 Volunteer Programme to Launch
NICOSIA, 13 November 2008 - A programme to attract
up to 500 volunteers for the XIII Games of the Small
States of Europe CYPRUS 2009 will be launched in
early December, it was decided at the latest Board
meeting of the Cyprus Olympic Committee. Stay tuned

First Commonwealth Youth Medal for Cyprus
PUNE, India, 17 October 2008 -
Giorgos Kazakos won the silver medal in the Men's
Skeet of the III Commonwealth Youth Games here
Friday, finishing second amongst eight finalists.
This was the first ever medal for Cyprus in the
Commonwealth Youth Games. Cyprus did not compete in
the inaugural Games of 2000, nor in the second
edition in 2004.

Begin Competition in Pune
PUNE, India, 12 October 2008 -
Cyprus embarked on its III Commonwealth Youth
Games 2008 quest here, with swimmer Anastasia
Christoforou leading the delegation of 14 athletes as
flag-bearer at the Opening Ceremony. The Ceremony, rich
on the cultural heritage of India, also included an arch
of water from the 71 participating countries. The water
from Cyprus was carried by middle distance runner
Stella Christoforou.

Cyprus in Commonwealth Youth Games
NICOSIA, 9 October 2008 -
Cyprus will take part in the III Commonwealth Youth
Games 2008 with 14 athletes in athletics, swimming,
tennis, boxing, shooting and table tennis. The
Commonwealth Youth Games 2008 are being held in Pune,
India, 12-18 October and include nine sports.

New President to Head
GSSE Operations
NICOSIA, 5 October 2008 -
Former Minister of Education, Ouranios Ioannides, was
elected president of the Cyprus Olympic Committee
at the 28th General Assembly
and will now head the preparations for the XIII
Games of the Small States of Europe CYPRUS 2009. In
a very close vote, Mr Ioannides edged outgoing
president Kikis N. Lazarides 21-20.

Cyprus Concludes Best-Ever Olympic Performance
BEIJING, 24 August 2008 -
With 24-year-old shooter Andri Eleftheriou bearing
the flag for Cyprus, the Closing Ceremony at the
'Bird's Nest' National Stadium of Beijing marked the
end of the XXIX Olympic Games and the start of a new
countdown--to London 2012. The Beijing Olympic Games
will go down in history for Cyprus. The irrefutable
statistics show these Games to have been the best
ever for Cyprus in their modern-era history.
