Following the disappointing
finish at the 1987 Games of the Small States of Europe,
Cyprus rose to the occasion when the island nation hosted
the Games in 1989 and dominated the medals table with 26
gold, sending Iceland to second place for the first time in
three editions of the Games.
For the first time since the
GSSE were established, all eight participating countries
went home with at least one gold medal.

From an organisational point
of view, the 1989 Games were a huge success and helped
establish standards for future editions. Spectators turned
out in droves to cheer on the 675 athletes (an increase in
participation of 44% compared to the 2nd edition of 1987 and
of a whopping 204% compared to the 1st edition of 1985).
The Opening and Closing
Ceremonies were held at the Makarion Complex, some
facilities of which are to be utilised during the XIII GSSE
CYPRUS 2009, twenty years on.
