The Republic of San Marino
is an enclave in central Italy, totally surrounded by its
big neighbour on the foothills of the Apennines, near the
Adriatic coast. It is the least populated of the Small
States of Europe, with just 28,000 inhabitants.
San Marino hosted the
inaugural Games of the Small States of Europe in 1985. The
GSSE returned there again in 2001. San Marino is fifth the
all-time GSSE medals table, with a total of 236.
San Marino has a
Mediterranean climate, with mild to cool winters and warm,
sunny summers.
